How to enjoy a shitty thing

If there was only one thing in the world, you’d see it for what it is.

Imagine you live in a world where there is nothing, and then, right in the center of that nothingness, one thing appears. You’ll probably just look at it and think: “Oh, that’s interesting. I like how that thing looks.” But as soon as two of those things appear, you wouldn’t be able to like them both: you’d start liking one of the things better than the other. Your thoughts would go something like this:

“These are two things“, then, “I think the right thing is better than the left one,” and then “the left thing sucks.”

Now imagine these things were your friends. Or your seat. Or your food. Or your job. Or your husband. Comparison will make you question if you’re happy with them all the time. And the bad news is: usually the best thing won’t be the one you have.

Now this happens everywhere and with everything we experience because there are infinite things in the world. It’s OK to have a preference. But it’s worth remembering that if we stop liking something, it’s not because it’s not good anymore, it’s simply because we stopped looking at it with our full attention.

Progress is a waste of time

We are confined to the little box of knowledge that is accepted by the western world.

Whatever is taught outside our boundaries doesn’t exist at all. That is the case of peaceful events between cultures, beautiful acts of kindness or societies without fear and hate, living happily with nature. For us, those people don’t exist. Because they are not featured in the news. And even if we’d assume they do, we couldn’t imagine there could be more than a few scattered hermits living outside our bubble. Because until events happen inside our culture, things don’t exist – and therefore, we can’t call it progress. 

Developed societies are the minority but it doesn’t seem like that. To see it, turn off your TV, stop hearing the radio and step outside your comfort zone (tip: Festivals like Boom seem to be great examples of that).

Our ‘developed’ society calls progress to anything we haven’t thought of before. We love the idea of progress more than we love progress. If this isn’t true, why do we work separately from other cultures that have broader and better answers than us for certain problems we have? This applies to medicine, psychology, philosophy and even science.

Imagine we’re all living in a forest. Between our tribe and the other tribe, there’s a river. Our neighbours discover how to build a Canoe in 8200 A.C. Without knowing this, we spend 100 years dreaming about crossing the river. Finally we make it. A dream turns into an idea and an idea turns into a Canoe. What an achievement! We give it a name. Awards are given. Canoes are the new trend.

But my question is: Couldn’t we simply have asked for advice to the neighbours crossing the river, instead of putting effort building something from scratch that already existed? Unfortunately in our society our neighbour’s progress is not considered real progress. For us, progress can only start in our tribe. We sometimes fail to see the whole picture because of that. When ‘progress’ is made, after a more sustainable result has been achieved by another culture, it’s not called progress. It’s called a waste of time.

Let’s include the whole world in in the meaning of progress. We don’t live under different skies! All we need to do is listen.

If you worry about it, you don’t need to

Good news today! The things your mind worries about will be sorted out soon. Sooner than anything else in your life.

If you realise what your worries are – the little ones that chatter in your mind one day, or prevent you from falling asleep at night – you’ll realise how soon they will be taken care of.

It’s the things you don’t realise that actually need more noticing. Not the other way round. Say you are doing a new dance class and you feel you are the worst student. You leave so disappointed you feel like crying, “I am worried I will never be as good as the other students”, you think. But think less. You wanted to be like the other students so bad that you forget to pay attention to how much better you got at moving your feet. So instead, you worry.

Isn’t worrying simply a symptom of how much you care? And don’t we know that everything that is cared for, grows beautifully? Isn’t that the case of trees, families, friendship and even skills?

Realise that worrying is nothing but a stressed-out version of: I care. And understand that everything that is cared for solves itself. Worrying is a part of the growing equation that can be completely eradicated from your dreams. Try to focus instead, on the little things that pass unnoticed. Nurture those things, and let the rest unfold naturally, just like it will.

Happiness Can Only Happen Here.

How distant can we be from our physical existence, until we realize we are too far to come back?

Humans stay here. Humans eat, bathe, pluck their eyebrows, feed the cat, clean the house, laugh, gossip, enjoy the sunset, make people angry in traffic, breathe.

Extraordinary humans go there. They think ahead, predict, envision. They are conscious of change. They understand the game. And they want to leave the world a happier place than when they arrived. But extraordinary humans can only start somewhere: here.

Only the right conditions can create these extraordinary humans. And that poses a problem. The system is not giving us the conditions we need to grow extraordinarily. And that can be as simple as having time to enjoy breakfast.

Why do we get jealous when someone goes on holiday? Falls in love? Creates a successful company? Why can’t we all have a dream job, fall in love and feel on vacations everyday? Shouldn’t we create a dream reality, rather than trying to escape from it?

The modern human is lost in transaction between the here and there. And that’s no place to be. We work for there and don’t have time to be here. We spend our time desiring, thinking, planning and predicting an unhealthy future inside our boring, confined boxes. We create unhealthy lifestyles. Unhealthy desires. Lives that make us sick. And it doesn’t have to be that way.

Most of us can be trained to be extraordinary. To enjoy the now. To be confident. To be loved. To be awesome. But we need conditions for that. We need truth. Not illusions that please our senses. Because if there is one thing you cannot do, society, is fool our soul.

So the only solution is to stay. To stay in an awesome reality. To stay “here”. Not dreaming about tomorrow, or remembering about yesterday. Simply enjoying life, right now. The most here that we can possibly be, because here can only happen now. And so does happiness.
